Music Copyright and Promotional Music production

Updated: Dec 8, 2022

What is Commercial Music?

Commercial music is used to mean music whose writing was motivated by financial gain.

Commercial music is a type of music that is created, performed, and marketed to the public, for the purpose of making money.

It is not cheap or easy to use commercial music legally.

(The example is above the text)

What is Production Music?

Production music is recorded music that can be licensed to customers for use in film, television, radio and other media.

Production music has been specifically composed for sync, but not for a specific production as it can be used anywhere from TV adverts to films.

Some Production Music is copyright free (With a one-off payment) or can be used through creative commons licensing.

(The example is above the text)

Give one example of the advantage of Production Music over trying to clear copyright over Commercial music.

Contact the music publisher who own the sync rights and their record label company who own the master rights; however, they can refuse.

What is Creative Commons?

Creative Commons is a system that allows you to legally use “some rights reserved” music, movies, images, and other content — all for free.

(The example is above the text)

What is your video and what music have you used?

My video is a trailer for a horror, prison escape film.

The music I have used is Cinematic trailer by Scott Holmes.

Why have you used this song?

I have used this song because I wanted to create tension to the trailer as many film trailers do most of the time.

(The link to song below)

What would you do differently?

What I would change is definitely the scenes with the entering and have some barbed wire and prisoners running to escape from this place.

Have you given credit to Scott Holmes?

I have credited Scott Holmes for his song in plain text at the end of the video.

Have you got any feedback?

The person who has given me feedback has said "It's okay, but the beginning scene was black and white and after that it's got colour, which is jarring."
