Narrative structure and Flashback

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

A man (Willy Wonka) was walking down a corridor with 3 children with their adults and then flashback occurs to the main character.

They included a flashback show how Willy Wonka was obsessed with sweets because they can have an explanation to what Wonka was like as a child.

The scene can be identified as a flashback because of flashing lights and a stretchy camera filter, which was very common for the 2000s.

The pace of the flashback was slow as they would want it to tell the backstory of the character properly although there is a part of the flashback where it was speed up as it is part of a transition.

Forrest Gump

The flashbacks show a man (Forrest Gump) narrating his backstory as he lived with his mother and how he met a girl and joined the army.

They included a flashback to tell the story of Forest and he how met famous people like JFK and Richard Nixon because if there was no narrator in the flashback the audience would have been confused.

It adds some history, emotion, excitement and romance into the film with these flashbacks.

The flashbacks can be identifies with Tom Hanks narrating his life and the flashbacks start when the main character was a young boy.
